۱- Benchmark Capital opposes SoftBank’s proposal to buy 17 to 22 percent of Uber for a reported $10B, The Wall Street Journal reports; the deal, which was to be funded by SoftBank’s $93B Vision Fund and SoftBank partners, would require existing investors to sell shares; Benchmark, one of Uber’s oldest and largest shareholders, owns about 13 percent of the company.
۲- Interest-free payday loans company Activehours raises $39M Series B led by Andreessen Horowitz with participation from Matrix Partners, March Capital Partners, others; provides a smartphone app through which hourly workers can get small cash advances; only charges a voluntary fee; raised $65M to date.
۳- Google Cloud updates Compute Engine with Nvidia P100 GPUs (in beta); Nvidia’s K80 GPUs are now generally available; provides greater computing power for organizations using Compute Engine for machine learning applications; both GPUs are available in four regions; Google offers sustained use discounts for each.
۴- Tesla to discontinue the Model S 75 on Sept 24; the rear-wheel-drive 75 is the most affordable of the Model S line; the all-wheel-drive 75D, 100D, and P100D will remain available; Tesla’s mass-market Model 3 is now in production and was always intended to replace the base Model S as the company’s cheapest offer.
۵- Google hires 2k HTC engineers and designers as part of a $1.1B deal; some of the individuals were involved in the development of the Pixel phone; the deal also includes a non-exclusive license for HTC’s intellectual property; HTC says it will continue to develop its own smartphones and Vive products.
۶- Baidu announces a $1.5B autonomous driving fund; full details unclear, but Baidu says the Apollo Fund will invest in 100 self-driving projects over a three-year period; comes as the company also releases Apollo 1.5, its latest driverless software.
۷- London-based fintech firm 10xBanking (aka 10x Future Technologies) raises $46M Series A from Ping An and Oliver Wyman; the firm is developing a banking platform that makes use of cloud services, encryption, machine learning, and more.
۸- Blockchain startup ChainLink (a division of SmartContracts) raises $32M via an initial coin offering; the firm is developing blockchain middleware to allow for self-executing contracts.
۹- Citymapper partners with Gett to launch a fixed route taxi service in London; operating during peak commuter hours, Project Black Bus lets riders hail a black cab between Waterloo and Highbury Islington; the pooled rides cost £۳ ($۴) each, and users can get in or out anywhere along the route.
