۱- Apple acquires wireless charging firm PowerbyProxi, reports Stuff; terms undisclosed; the New Zealand-based company produces Qi-compliant modules for a range of devices; raised $9M to date .
۲- Pharmaceutical boards have licensed Amazon to act as a wholesale pharmaceutical distributor in at least 12 states over the past year; an application is pending for ME; the NV license, for example, allows the company to ship prescription drugs from facilities in IN to buyers in NV.
۳- Amazon announces Amazon Key, a service that lets couriers drop off packages inside a Prime customer’s home; makes use of a smart lock and the newly launched Cloud Cam which records the delivery process; Alexa-enabled Cloud Cam also offers motion detection and online storage starting at $70 per year; Cloud Cam is available to preorder for $120, or $250 with a compatible smart lock; Amazon Key launches Nov 8 in select cities.
۴- Waymo says it will begin testing driverless cars in Michigan to see how they handle snow, sleet, and ice; the firm has been testing in cold weather conditions since 2012, but says the Metro Detroit region offers new challenges, such as navigating icy roads in densely populated areas.
۵- SoftBank CEO Masa Son says the company’s $100B Vision Fund has already generated $3B in profit and has earned a roughly 22-percent return over the last five months, based on current portfolio company valuations; previously announced that SoftBank plans a new Vision Fund every two to three years.
۶- Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to invest $1B in Virgin Galactic and spinoff companies The Spaceship Company and Virgin Orbit; funds will go to Virgin’s space tourism program and to development of a satellite launch vehicle; the country has the option to invest an additional $480M in the future.
۷- Fintech startup Jiko raises $7.7M Series A from Upfront Ventures, Radical Impact, and others; the firm (currently in beta) provides digital banking services; raised $9.4M to date.
